With incredible community support the new site in Sipson, Heathrow is moving in leaps and bounds. We have planted our first climbing roses along the front fence, potted sunflowers and sweet peas, and now have a wonderful, fully functional kitchen! As the work progresses our aspirations grow further, and we need your help to make this place as amazing as it has the potential to be. We are having a second work weekend on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th March. It will be a dual weekend of working on the site and doing solidarity support for BA workers on strike at Heathrow Airport. There'll be something for everyone to do, but we will have specific jobs going on and need a breadth of skills to make each one happen. Some of the jobs will be:
  • Glazing- We need to replace many of the panes of glass in the 3 greenhouses and would value anyone with glazing skills or the willingness to have a go.
  • Compost toilet building- At the moment we only have a toilet inside and we want to make the most of our poo, so a compost toilet is the way to go. If you have any experience of planning/building compost toilets (or if you want to learn) then we need you!
  • Potting and planting- Spring has most definitely arrived and we need to get planting. This will range from creating a meadow area to planting potatoes in old tyres.
  • Bender building- For anyone with bender building experience or who wants to learn about building benders.
  • Grey water system- We are planning to build a grey water system (sustainable waste water management)
  • Site beautification- We want to make this a really beautiful site. Artists, sculptors and creative minds needed. Note to sculptors — there are lots of interesting car parts which could be used.
Transition Heathrow and Workers Climate Action will also be supporting the BA workers on the picket line at Heathrow Airport on the 26th/27th until the following Tuesday. Whilst working at the gardens in Sipson, we hope to host some films, discussions and provide support to them in the form of food, drink and solidarity activities. One last thing — we need a name for our site! Lots of ideas have been floating around but any suggestions are welcome. We hope to see lots of people on that weekend! Bring food to share, bundles of energy and any arts and craft materials you might have in a dusty cupboard… Spread the word to anyone who might be interested. Everyone is welcome, young or old, shy or bold. Let's hope the weather's hot, not cold. How to get here: Vineries Close, off Sipson Lane. Trains from Paddington go to West Drayton, then bus 222 from West Drayton station stops outside King William IV pub on Sipson Road and the gardens are around the corner. Site phone number: 07890751568. Love and blue skies from Sipson, Transition Heathrow x x
