Hebden Bridge certainly rose to the occasion at the Transition Town Love Bread event last Saturday. The event which was part of the Happy Valley Food Month, kicked off with children’s bread making and saw children of all ages making a range of letters and shapes out of bread which was then cooked in the oven and eaten up. The first demonstration of the day was by Pinocchio’s’ Pizza restaurant. Tony the chef showed everyone how to make pizza from mixing the raw ingredients to adding the toppings and cooking it. His skill at shaping the pizza in the air impressed everyone and there was no shortage of volunteers to try the finished items when they came out of the oven. The rest of the event had opportunities to make a loaf of bread, bake it and take it home. There were discussions on gluten and wheat free bread, bread related films for all ages, not to mention the chance to try a range of delicious home made bread, soup and cakes. The event finished with a talk from the Handmade Bakery, which is based in Marsden and is the first bakery in the country to use a community supported bakery model. They bought along their sour dough starter, which they gave out, along with recipes and top tips on bread making and were an inspirational finish to a very tasty day. “It was great to see so many people of all ages trying their hand at making bread,” said one of the organisers Lizzie Hughes, “The discussion on the community supported bakery was great and we are looking to have a follow up meeting to see if something like it would work in Hebden.” If anyone would like to be part of a community-supported bakery then please contact Lizzie on 07880740773. Hebden Bridge Transition Town would like to thank all of the local businesses that supported the event, particularly Pinocchio’s’ restaurant for sharing their skills and knowledge about pizza making and Pot Stop, Pennine Provision and the Bookcase for donating prizes for the bread based raffle.
