"Greenest Town In The Land" is a project designed to enable the people of the Hebden Bridge area to collectively make a difference to the town's sustainability. The idea is to give people opportunities and encouragement to take a series of small steps which over time will:-

  • reduce the area's greenhouse gas emissions.
  • give a sense of community ownership of the area's sustainabilty.
  • promote localisation of the production of our resources.
  • increase our sense of community and pride in the area.
  • reduce wasteful practices.
  • promote Hebden Bridge as a model of sustainable best practice.

Grass roots community projects often rely on people joining groups, going to meetings and devising their own ways of initiating change. This works well for some people, but in reality you need to be pretty committed to your cause and have plenty of time on your hands to go through this process. All too often this results in well intentioned and enthusiastic people joining projects for a while before becoming disillusioned and drifting away again.

This project takes a different approach. By offering people simple things to do which they can see will make a difference if enough people do it; and by giving the project a recognisable brand with which people can associate themselves and feel ownership of, "Greenest Town In The Land" expects a much greater level of participation. Over the coming months and years the project will introduce multiple activities for the community to engage with. Each step will be designed for easy participation, and we'll be asking people to suggest projects they want to see happening around town, thereby giving a greater sense of ownership to the community.

Launched at the Local Economy Showcase event at Riverside School on 16th July 2011, "Greenest Town In The Land"s first step is the "Switch To Renewables" campaign, intended to encourage as many households and local businesses as possible to obtain their electricity from renewable resources. Once this phase is established and making headway further strands will be introduced to the project which will increase the overall sustainability of the area.

Small steps, when taken together make great strides, and great strides can cover great distances. By participating in this project, each small step taken by each member of the community will be helping to make Hebden Bridge the "GREENEST TOWN IN THE LAND".
